Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a 2020 first-person shooter video game developed by Treyarch and Raven Software. The game is a direct sequel to the 2010 game Call of Duty: Black Ops and is set before the events of Black Ops II. It is the seventeenth major installment in the Call of Duty Franchise.
The main storyline is set in the 1980s during the cold war and is inspired by real-life events. The game starts with three CIA officials being sent to target the two major suspects in the Iran hostage Crisis. When they catch them the suspects tell the officials about Perseus being the mastermind of the crisis. When the US president learns about Perseus, he authorizes a black operation in order to locate him. After recruiting several other agents, the group sets out to find the whereabouts of Perseus.
It is later revealed that Perseus infiltrated a top secret American Program known as Operation Greenlight. This program planted neutron bombs in every major European city to deny their use to the Soviets in case of an invasion. The team learns that Perseus was able to steal the detonation codes for all the bombs and now has the ability to destroy Europe and put the blame on the US.
It is later revealed that one of the recruited members in the team is an agent of Perseus who can choose between revealing Perseus’ whereabouts or staying loyal to him. This decision changes the outcome of the story.
The game supports cross-platform gameplay and cross-platform progression. Several modes form the previous games return in this version in addition to a few new ones. One of the new modes called “Fireteam” supports up to 40 players. The game brings back the ‘Create a Class’ system from the modern warfare but it is different in two major ways. Each class now has a wild card choice out of Gunfighter, Danger Close, Perk Greed and Lawbreaker. Additionally the field upgrades are now implemented as part of the class loadouts. The game features collectible intel spread throughout different locations in the map and the map is now big enough to house 12v12 combat as opposed to 6v6.
The game also features a Zombie mode with a new storyline called Dark Aether. Instead of assigning you predefined characters, the game allows you to take up characters form the multiplayer mode as part of a CIA response team known as the Requiem.
