Divinity: Dragon Commander blends turn-based and real-time strategy, action focused gameplay and roleplaying into a mega adventure implementing a War-esque interface and an engaging tactical mode. The game features a variety of gameplay styles and has single-player, competitive multi-player, and co-operative multi-player modes.
You take up the role of the Dragon Commander and your mission is to reunite a broken empire and to become the new emperor using different leadership, combative and political strategies with an added twist of your ability to become a dragon. There are land, sea and air force elements in the game where you have to engage in combined operations.
The game is divided into three phases and each phase affects the other.
The first phase has political strategic elements, where the player has to make political decisions which affect the other two phases. The player can receive cards which can be traded in for special effects in the other two phases.
The second phase of the game is turn-based strategy based on the style of board games. In this phase, you can use cards earned in the first phase to manipulate areas of your enemies or control your own territory. This Phase gives you the option to play cards when in a battle and you can choose whether to automatically resolve the battle, or choose to fight.
The third phase is when you have joined a battle. You can recruit units and construct buildings. Apart from the point-and-click based style of control, you can also take the form of a dragon in the battle and help your units.
Turn Based map implemented in the game allows you to make several moves ahead and all the decisions you make, their effects can be seen in the battle
The game takes place in the distant past of the previous Divinity games. The player character is the bastard son of a recently deceased emperor. The emperor’s sons have made an evil deal with a demon which allows them to introduce a new technology to the world. Maxos previously featured in Divinity 2 urges the player to fight the war in order to destroy the technology introduced by the demon. Several non-human elements like Undead, the Lizardmen, the Elves, the Dwarves, and the Imps have been implemented in the game.
You can choose to play the single player campaign mode or play against other Dragon Knights. You can also start your own multiplayer campaign.
