Endless Space 2 is a science fiction, turn-based strategic space opera, developed by Amplitude Studios. It serves as a sequel to the 2012 game, Endless Space.
In the game, you are given the control of a small nation that you have to lead into a powerful mighty empire. The game features “Systems” as the game’s main units. Each of these unique systems consists of 5 planets and every system is different in its own regard. You can colonize these planets if the climate allows for it. Planets also have their associated anomalies and these anomalies can be explored using an explorer ship. You can even travel between systems following fixed star lines. To win the game, you must colonize different systems across the galaxy while defeating other players by declaring war on them or forming alliances.
The game features different types of governments made up of different parties which are either established or entrenched. Politics is also integrated deeply into the game. In addition to that, the game implements “Research” as the key element for advancing through the game. There are four different categories of research: Empire Development, Science & technology, Military and business & trade. These categories are further divided into four levels. Researching in one level unlocks the next level.
As for combat, the game integrates features like engaging in ship battles, ability to retrieve from battles and a multitude of other battle tactics which you can use to improve your chances of winning. You can also design your own ships from three classes of ship hulls including small, medium and large. Each of these classes have their own advantages and drawbacks. But you don’t have to engage in battle every time you want to expand your empire. You can improve your relationships with some ‘minor civilizations’ and you can use them to your advantage by getting them to send you resources. If they don’t comply, you can then absorb them by declaring war on them, expanding your empire in the process.
Overall, the gameplay is immersive, detailed and feature-rich and elements like research test your creative skills. With the ability to tweak every little detail of your empire, you actually leave the game feeling like a true conqueror.
