The game follows the story of an engineer who accidentally crash landed on an extraterrestrial planet and has to build a rocket to go back to his home planet. The game formally ends by launching a rocket but due to it being an open world game, you can continue to play it after the end of storyline.
The game’s main objective is to build and maintain factories. The game starts with you collecting the necessary resources to build a factory. Then, as time passes, you can go on to become an industrial giant manufacturing and developing all sorts of resourceful products. Initially, everything from chopping down trees and transporting them to the construction sites will be done via manual low-tech tools but as you gain experience with time, you will start automating tasks and deploying high end technologies culminating in you successfully building a rocket and launching it back towards your home planet. In addition to building automated factories, you also have to mine resources, build infrastructure and do research as well. And as you make further developments using research and technology, you can get into more advanced industries like oil refining and making powered exoskeletons.
The game blends real time strategy with survival elements. The game emphasizes the impact of industrial revolution on the planet and its ecosystem by featuring the planets indigenous fauna known as Worms, Biters, and Spitters becoming aggressively agitated as the pollutants accumulate in the environment. If you don’t take the necessary measures, these plants will attack you and force you into combat. You then have to defend yourself and your industrial empire and you can do so by using defense turrets, tanks and a handful of other powerful weapons.
The game officially supports mods and there is a handy mod manager built right into the game. This opens a whole new world of customizations and tweaking. From small adjustments to complete overhauls, the options are really endless.
