Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. This is the relaunched version of the 14th installment in the Final Fantasy Series. This version carries over the original game’s setting, story and lore while featuring a new graphics engine, server structure and terrain.
The game is set in the fictional planet of Hydaelyn. This planet has three continents, multiple climates and environments. The region focused in this game is called Eorzea. There are four major city-states in Eorzea including the forest nation of Gridania. The Desert surrounding Ul’dah, the snowy mountains covered Ishgard and thalassocracy of Limsa Lominsa. These four city-states constitute the Eorzean Alliance. Eorzea’ history has roots in the Umbral and Astral Eras. Umbral eras are the eras of calamity and they are followed by periods of cultural growth and enlightenment called the Astral Eras. Each pair of Umbral and Astral Era corresponds to one of the six elements; water, earth. fire, lightening, ice and wind. People hoped the calamity would never return after the sixth Astral Era and were hoping for it to last forever. However, the Garlean Empire indulged in a series of events that led to the arrival of another Umbral Era.
Final Fantasy XIV features a persistent world where players have the ability to interact with each other and the environment. You can create your own characters in the game and the customization options include changing the name, gender, race, starting class and facial features. The game features two starting classes to choose from, Disciple of War and Disciple of magic. You also need to select a server for your character to run on. The game implements a vast library of automatically translated game terms giving players who speak different languages the ability to communicate, interact and socialize with each other. This lets players from all around the globe coming from different cultures and background celebrate their mutual interests together without being restricted by the language barrier.
The user interface of the game is unified across all platforms giving the players to choose between a keyboard/mouse combo and a game controller. The game has also made significant improvements in character progression. You can now gain experience points to improve your characters and the characters level up after getting a specific number of experience points, giving them significantly improved statistics. You can get experience points by competing in several different player vs environment challenges such as completing quests, killing monsters in the game world, participating in full active time events and exploring dungeons. Full active time events (FATE) is a new feature that lets a large number of users participate in the same event regardless of their party status. The game also features three forms of PvP challenges in the game; Wolves den, Frontlines and Rival Wings.
While the original release failed to gain any respect from the gaming community, this revised version rights most of the wrongs of that release in addition to implementing several new and exciting features, this game definitely lives up to the legacy of the Final Fantasy series and sets a new bar when it comes to MMORPGs.
