Nioh 2 is an action role-playing game developed by Team Ninja. The game serves as a prequel to the 2017 game Nioh.
The game is set in the 1500s in the Sengoku period and features Hide who is a Shiftling as the main protagonist of the game. Primarily a half-yōkai, Hide’s journey in the Sengoku Era begins after befriending Tōkichirō and Mumyo. Mumyo is the leader of the Sohaya group and a demon hunter by profession while Tōkichirō is a merchant who sells Amrita. The game also features an enigmatic figure from Hide’s past creating hurdles in every step of his way.
The game features a single player mode in addition to the three player co-op multiplayer mode. In the single player mode, you can access locations named Benevolent Graves which allow other players controlled by AI to aid you in combat. The game gives you the ability to create your own customizable protagonist and equip him with powerful weapons including Kusarigama and Odachi. The game’s main antagonists are the Yōkai who have the ability to create a Dark Realm. Inside these dark realms, yōkai’s damage and defense are boosted and your Ki‘s ability is greatly reduced. In order to counter this handicap, the game gives you access to the shiftling skill tree which features a handful of nifty skills.
Another feature called “Sole Cores” allows you to transform from a half-yōkai into a complete yōkai with all their abilities including the yōkai shift abilities. These sole cores are sometimes dropped by the hostile yōkai.
While the main game is based in the Sengoku period, the game also features The First Samurai, Darkness in the Capital and The Tengu’s Disciple based during the start, middle and end of the Heian periods respectively. The First Samurai takes Hide to the Suzuki pass where he encounters Otakemaru. Darkness in the Capital allows you to go back in time and uncover the truth behind Hide’s identity while the Tengu’s Disciple acts as a prologue revealing the origins of Nioh 2’s story.
