Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment is a stand-alone campaign and a free expansion for Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. It serves as a prequel to Shovel of Hope and Plague of Shadows.
In this campaign, Specter Knight is sent on a journey by The Enchantress to recruit eight knights to join The Order of No Quarter. He starts off his journey during the twilight. Throughout the journey, Specter Knight has memories from his past life. He was an adventurer named Donovan before dying, He along with his friend went to the Tower of Fate in an attempt to find an amulet that had the power to protect people. When they found the amulet, they ran into Shield Knight who told them that the amulet was cursed. Due to Donovan’s dislike towards knights, he engaged in a battle with the Shield Knight. The floor beneath them collapsed fatally injuring Donovan and killing his friend.
Shield Knight got corrupted into The Enchantress and she offered to save his life in exchange for recruiting eight knights for her. When Donovan agreed, she killed him and resurrected him as Specter Knight. She then gave him a locket and revealed that it will gain power as he recruits knights and when all eight knights are recruited, there will be enough power in the locket to bring him back to life. He first finds black knight and convinces him to join The Order of No Quarter. Black Knight refuses and the two engage in a battle. Black Knight recognizes his fighting style and realizes that he is actually a rogue named Donovan but still refuse to join. When he gets back to the enchantress, she is enraged upon his inability to convince black shield. The Specter Knight then uses a Magic mirror operated by Dark Acolyte to transport to locations of other knights to recruit them. Meanwhile Reize, Donovan’s friend’ son enters the tower. Specter Knight ends up recruiting seven Knights but the Black Knight suddenly appears to reveal that The Enchantress is actually Shield Knight. When Specter Knight goes after her, she fills Reize with dark energy and makes him her eighth knight. Specter knight uses his locket to bring his dead friend’s son back to life and offers to take his place as the eight knights instead, giving away his hopes of ever getting free.
Specter knight play style in this campaign is very different from his boss fights. He can now climb up walls, leap over gaps, glide across the ground and has hold over a variety of different weapons. There is a new body swap mode along with Co-op. Gameplay is very smooth and the soundtrack truly complements the action sequences.
