Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a 2018 crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios. It is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. Series and is a successor to the 2014 games “Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS and Wii U”.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate includes a roster of characters spanning across the entire Nintendo universe and allows up to eight players to battle it out for the last man standing spot. The main objective is to knock everyone out of the arena until there is only one winner. The game allows you to use various items to aid you in this task including Poké Balls and Assist trophies. You can summon various NPCs and Pokémon using these items who then fight alongside you. The game features several modes including Classic, Hume-Run Contest, Smashdown, Squad Strike, Special Smash and a tournament mode.
There are 103 different levels in the game and they can all be played in Battlefield and Omega forms. The game introduces a new feature called “Stage Morph” which allows the players to select two different levels that the game will then switch between after certain intervals. The game assigns a percentage meter to each character which fills up as they take damage. Taking more damage makes them more prone to go air-borne and be thrown out of the arena. A great way to finish your opponents off is through a Final Smash Attack which you can execute by obtaining a smash ball or filling up a special meter. The game feature three victory conditions: “Stock” allows you to have certain number of lives and your job is to win the game before running out of them. Another condition is called “Timed” in which you have to win the most points within a specific time limit. Lastly, there is “Stamina” which requires you to reduce your opponents health down to zero in order to defeat them.
A major new change in this version of the series is the introduction of spirits which replaces the trophies featured in previous games. These spirits are used to equip the character with unique abilities and have an evolution and growth system. Spirits can be collected by completing a set of challenges known as Spirit Battles. Additionally, there is a spirit board mode which offers a rotating set of spirit battles that you can collect spirits from.
