The wand chooses the wizard. But in Hogwarts Legacy, wizards have the rare opportunity to choose and customize their wand. The chosen wand will remain throughout the game, as players can’t exchange or replace wands. The lore surrounding wands helps immerse players into the magical world of Hogwarts. Customizing and personalizing your wand doesn’t have tangible effects on gameplay or the character arc.
Wand Styles
Wands are magical objects through which a wizard/witch channels their magic. Early in the game, the player is sent to Ollivander’s to get a new wand. After a few errors, the players are asked to choose and customize their wands. There are 8 different styles of wands to select from and three distinct colours for each style. That amounts to a whopping 24 distinct choices to select your wand from. Talk about spoiled for choice; the styles range from the notched, ringed, stalk, natural, soft spiral, and classic to crooked spiral.
Wood Type
There are 38 different types of wood to choose from. In Wandlore, the wood type is highly important as specific wood types have specific traits corresponding to their owner. For example, wands crafted from Cedarwood characterize the strength of character and are highly loyal to those who wield them. Similarly, Dogwood wands are known for their playfulness and the tendency to entertain their owners.
The rarest type of wood and extremely powerful is the Elder wood. Only the most remarkable wizards can wield it. The most powerful wand ever created, The Elder Wand, is made out of Elder wood. Yew wood holds a dark and fearsome reverence in the wizarding community. Regardless, players won’t be able to physically see any difference, so indulging in the lore of the wands helps immerse players in the game.
Flexibility and Length
Moving on to the flexibility of a wand, 18 different options are available. They range from quite bendy, very flexible, surprisingly swishy, springy, pliant, and hard to unyielding. Players can also modify the wand’s length, starting from 9.5 inches and going to 14.5 inches. It doesn’t affect gameplay or spells cast and allows players to indulge in the lore of wands. You can personalize the wand’s length to your liking.
Core Type
After selecting the wood type, length, and flexibility of the wand, the player has to choose between three options for the core of their wand. The core is what powers the wand, and subsequently, it’s the most important part of the wand.
Dragon Heartstring is a very powerful core. Recognized for producing powerful magic. Unicorn Hair is also an exceptionally reliable core and fiercely loyal to its owner. Known for producing consistent magic. Lastly, the Phoneix Feather is an extremely rare core noted for producing a great variety of magic.
