A Blockchain Hustler and a Cringey Rapper Have Been Charged with Laundering $4.5B in Stolen Bitcoin

A blockchain hustler has been charged with laundering $4.5B in stolen bitcoin.

Around 120,000 bitcoin were stolen in a 2016 hack.

They have arrested two people on charges of conspiring to launder $4.5 billion in cryptocurrency.

IIya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan conspired to launder the proceeds of stolen bitcoin.

It was transferred to a digital wallet controlled by Lichtenstein.

Initially 25,000 bitcoin had been transferred out of that wallet and laundered through a complex series of transactions, later deposited into the accounts owned by them.

Federal agents were able to decrypt a file stored in Lichtenstein’s cloud storage account that provided a list of virtual currency addresses and keys in January.

More than 94,000 bitcoin were subsequently seized after the confirmation that nearly all of the addresses were directly linked to the hack.

They were valued more than $3.6 billion at the time of seizure.

They proved that they can follow money through the blockchain and cryptocurrency is not a safe haven for money laundering.

They said that they will take a firm stand against those who try to use virtual currencies for crime purposes.
