Town of Salem is a social deduction strategy game developed and published by BlankMediaGames. The game is heavily inspired by classic party games Mafia and Werewolf. It is a browser based online multiplayer game typically involving 7 to 15 players at a time.
The game is based in the infamous historical town of Salem, Massachusetts, known for the witch-hunt trials. The player hosting the game chooses different roles from a list of 49 different roles in the game. These roles are assigned randomly to all players. These players are then divided into teams and they strive to eliminate each other in order to take control of the town. The game features 7 modes in addition to the custom mode. The roles are predefined in those 7 modes and you cannot pick and choose which roles you want in the game. Once the game begins, it asks you to choose your in-game name, and if you don’t type in anything, the game assigns you a name based on the real-life people of the witch hunt trial. There are three main alignments in the game. Town, Mafia and Neutral. The winning rule for town is to lynch every wrongdoer while for Mafia, it is to kill everyone that won’t submit.
The game implements a night and day cycle and most roles use their abilities in the night. Each match constitutes three main phases. In the night, all the evil doings occur like murders and other crimes. Mafia members can speak to each other in the night. Other activities like doctors healing the injured members also take place in the night but they are not announced by the game. When the day starts, the town members discover the dead bodies of people who died in the night along with a will and a death note. In the day, the town members discuss who they suspect of being evil and have to vote. The criminal is accused on the basis of a majority vote and he then has to prepare a defense. If the defendant fails to prove his innocence, he is executed by hanging. Making a will is an important aspect of the game since members don’t know each other. You write your doings on the will and it helps town members identify the evil members from the good.
The game implements real life criminal tactics like lying, deception, covering up and framing other people. The town members have to catch the criminals bypassing all these tactics and this make the game really exciting and immersive.
