Traits in Hogwarts Legacy allow players to bewitch their gear with magical powers. There are 75 available traits to choose from. Some are very powerful, while most of them are pretty useless. This guide ranks all the Level 3 Traits and suggests the best ones used in combat. Level 3 Traits can only be used on legendary gear, so ensure you have legendary gear.
Traits you need to avoid
Starting with Traits you don’t need, you will want to skip the Defensive traits. These Traits are in green, adding little defensive abilities in combat. Players should not collect or use these as they waste precious Traits on your Legendary gear. Manipulation III is the one to skip, as it promises to inflict significant damage on targets cursed with the Imperio spell. To the contrary, little damage is dealt to the target cursed with Imperio, so it is strongly recommended to skip this one.
Control III is another weak trait; it aims to increase damage with Ancient Magic Throw. In reality, there’s a bit of an increase but nothing worthwhile. Ancient Magic Focus III is another ineffective trait, as it aims to fill up your Ancient Magic Meter faster, but in reality, no discernable difference can be found. Concentration III aims to significantly increase damage from your basic spells when it only slightly increases the damage from regular spells. Avoid this one.
Cruelty III is a mediocre trait, promising significant damage with Crucio. No tangible difference can be found playing with or without this trait. Fangs III increases the damage from the Chinese Chomping Cabbages, which is insignificant compared to the other plant trait. Venom III is a futile trait to have on your gear. It aims to increase the damage from Venomous Tentacula, but the plant is quite slow. Although it can break the enemy’s shield, the other plant trait (Herbology III) is more substantial in damaging enemies.
Not too good, Not too bad Traits
These traits fall right in the middle of our ranking system. They are useful and effective sometimes, but competing against other Level 3 traits tends to fall short. Starting with Ambush III, it’s a stealth trait allowing players to go into stealth and deal extra damage. This trait is useful as Petrifcus Totalus can one-shot enemies to defeat them. Explosive III is a dominant trait, massively increasing the damage from casting the Bombarda spell.
Similarly, Destruction III overpowers the Confringo spell, massively increasing the damage enemies take. These two traits are deadly, but the only problem is that when players reach Level 30, these two spells can one-shot enemies into oblivion. So it’s not that powerful even with the Traits. Scorching III is an impressive trait, massively increasing the damage from Incendio. The only problem is that it’s for a short-range spell and difficult to use over a wide area. Pretty effective for dealing with The Undead and spiders.
Deafening III is an effective trait for players who use Mandrakes in combats. It increases the damage from Mandrakes and makes the stun time longer. For players using plants, I’d recommend this one. Binding III significantly increases the damage from Petrifcus Totalus. This is crucial for players who like stealth and using Petrifcus Totalus to one-shot enemies. It’s a must for stealth aficionados.
The crème de la crème of Traits
These traits are the best out of all 75 available traits. Using these in combat massively overpowers your wizard/witch, turning difficult-to-defeat opponents into one-sided contests. Without further ado, let’s begin.
Unforgivable III is a very powerful Trait, massively increasing the damage to cursed targets. This trait is the pick of the lot, overpowering your wizard. Wizards with an affinity to Dark Arts should undeniably equip this Trait on all their legendary gears. It boosts your Ancient Magic meter, powers your Ancient Magic throw, and charges regular damage spells. An essential Trait for any wizard in Hogwarts Legacy. Highly recommend this one.
Herbology III is a very compelling plant Trait. It substantially increases the damage from all your plant attacks. This is extremely useful for those using Mandrakes, Chinese Chomping Cabbages, and Venomous Tentacula in combat. Normal attacks without this trait range from 150-300, but with this talent, 1500-2200 attack damage is frequent. Equipping this talent allows you to wreak havoc on the battlefield with various plants. Highly recommend this one to those using Plants in combat.
Ancient Magic III heavily boosts the damage from Ancient Magic. Most of the time, it can one-shot kill enemies, including Trolls. This trait extracts massive damage from enemies and is vital in combat. Works similarly to the Avada Kedavra spell. One cast of ancient magic can obliterate an enemy. This trait is highly valuable and a proper alternative for Wizards who dislike Dark Arts. Strongly recommend adding this trait to your legendary gear.
Although not as powerful as the traits mentioned above, Laceration III is still pretty effective, increasing the damage from the Diffindo spell. It’s very handy to use on trolls when they’ve crashed into the wall, leaving them vulnerable. Another top-ranked trait, Disarming III, is supreme, overpowering the Expelliarmus spell to deal excessive damage while simultaneously disarming the enemy. A single cast of Expelliarmus is often enough to completely drain the health pool of enemies such as Goblins, Poachers, and other Wizards. Highly recommend both of these talents to wizards who use Expelliarmus and Diffindo spells.
Collecting Traits
For players looking to collect these traits, raid any bandit camp and loot the collection chests to get traits. For those looking for an easier way, save your game before opening any collection chest. Open the chest, and if the trait isn’t what you’re looking for, reload the game, and the game will spawn a new random trait in the collection chest. Keep cycling through this process until you find the trait you need. Bonus tip: You only need one specific trait and can make copies of it using the Enchanted loom. That’s all from this guide. Thanks for reading this through.
