Deflect is the most important mechanic in the game. There are three different types of deflecting; first, you have to make enough progress in the main Battlefield called Village of Calamity to make it to this battle flag. So after spawning in, just run forward until you get to that Battle Flag. Climb up the ledge, go over the rooftop, and jump on the other side to get to the flag.
There are three different types of deflect; standard deflect, guarding deflect, and deflect countering. For the first one, you have to press B and a directional button movement. For the guarding deflect, hold your left bumper or L1 on a PlayStation controller, you can deflect whilst you are guarding. Equip your weapons and then hold your right bumper to glow orange inside your body and then deflect. It will be a counter move and it will deal damage.
It is recommended to use the guarding deflect if you are a beginner. When your enemy warms up for the attack, you need to press B and move to the side just before he lands it and then deflects the attack. After that, hold the left bumper and start deflecting. So if you mess up the deflect, it will still help you out to finish the enemy. After that, head to the next enemy and do the right bumper. Hold your right bumper and figure out the exact timing on this one. Even without deflecting you will still do a special move and deal damage. Just keep attacking to finish off the enemy.
Deflecting can be the difference between life and death. If you fight with an enemy who constantly builds up Spirit attacks, you need to use the spirit attack and then the guardian deflects to stun the enemy. After that, use your main attack to counter him. It is strongly recommended that beginners hold down their left bumper or their L1 button and let their guardian block them.
