Getting a squadron isn’t very hard. The first thing you’ll need before anything is a freighter, so make sure you have that and a lot of Nanites depending on if you want to max your squadron out or not.

You can get a max of 4 slots for your squadron with each slot costing nanites, 1st slot: 800 Nanites, 2nd slot: 3500 Nanites, 3rd slot: 7500, 4th slot: 10,000 Nanites. So if you want to max out your squadron, you will need about 22000 Nanites.

You can find people to recruit for your squadron by simply going to a space station or a trading post and waiting for ships to land. When they land, you can talk to the owner of the ship and you’ll be able to recruit them into your squadron.
