Description
Persona 5 is a role-playing video game developed by Atlus. It is the sixth installment in the Persona series.
The storyline is set in Modern-day Japan and the main protagonist is a high school student called Joker who has been forced to change his school after he is wrongly accused of assaulting a woman.
When a drunken man on the street tries to abuse a woman, Joker intervenes and defends her. He is however falsely accused of being the perpetrator and is charged with assault resulting in his expulsion from his school. He then moves to Tokyo where he joins Shujin Academy. There he is introduced to the Metaverse, a supernatural realm containing the physical manifestation of the mankind’s subconscious desires. People with dark enough desires form their own “palace” inside the metaverse which houses a shadow version of them. These shadow versions possess a “treasure” which is a symbol for their dark desires. Joker then meets Morgana who tells him that corruption from the world can be ended by stealing wicked people’s treasures.
Joker then forms the vigilante group known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts and starts stealing corruption from the heart of the people. A fairly polarizing task to undertake, the group soon starts attracting the attention of police and the public prosecutor. Some time later, an assassin who has been murdering people and framing the Phantom Thieves for the killings, joins the group under the orders of Masayoshi Shido. A corrupt politician looking to remove all the hurdles in his path to become Japan’s Prime Minister, Shido was the one responsible for wrongly accusing Joker of assault.
The game features a day/night cycle and weather systems. The game brings back several elements from the previous games all the while introducing new ones. Personas which are physical manifestation of inner psyche make a comeback, this time much refined and polished. The social link system featured in previous games has been massively improved allowing the main protagonist to develop relationships with other characters who then become his Confidants. Developing these relationships unlocks various abilities like Baton Pass and boosting Yen gain and experience points. The game incorporates two types of dungeons to depict the Metaverse including Palaces and Mementos. Mementos are multi-layered and randomly generated. Palaces are story specific dungeons featuring Security levels and Safe rooms. Frequently getting spotted or fleeing combat results in your security level being raised and eventually gets you kicked out of the palace. Safe rooms allow you to regroup, save the game and heal your party.
The combat system is turn based just like previous games. You can initiate a battle upon encountering an enemy or launch a secret attack known as “Ambush”. A variety of melee and Ranged weapons are available to choose from. Additionally, you can summon your personas to take care of business for you.
