Spacebase Startopia is a simulation based space empire building game that incorporates elements of real time strategy. The game is developed by Realmforge Studios and is based on the 2001 game Startopia.
Just like in Startopia, you are assigned the control of a space station and you need to balance the wants and need of all the different species of aliens that the station is home to.
The game borrows a lot of elements from the original title and gives them a unique twist of its own. The game features a feminine Artificial Intelligence assistant name “VAL” that guides you throughout the game. She is very helpful but sometimes gives you options that force you to choose the lesser of the two evils. The spacebase is divided into three decks: the Bio Deck consists of the flora and fauna and houses the Dryads. The Fun deck is centered around entertainment activities for the visitors while the Sub Deck is a general multi-purpose area that also houses all the rooms vital to survival. Additionally, the game features a research tree that you can use to unlock additional features in the game.
In contrast to the previous game, the communications array on your space station previously operated by the Targs has now been handed over to Bugs. The game features robots acting as garbage cans who go to the recyclers to puke everything out once they are full. This rubbish is then converted into vermin which are large green insects with one humanoid eye. Being an empire building game, the game allows you to use the environment of your space station as part of your economy with money being represented by “energy”. You run out of energy as you build things and you can use the aforementioned rubbish to replenish it. If you don’t recycle the rubbish to convert into energy, more and more vermins are produced which eventually make everybody sick. As a matter of fact, your goal throughout the second campaign level is to cure patients.
The game features a 10 mission single player campaign that assigns you the task to create the most feature packed tourist attractions in the whole universe. Additionally, the game also features a Skirmish mode. In addition to the extensive single player campaign, the game can also be played in multiplayer mode with up to four players.
