Cadmium comes from planets in the red star systems, and you will need to use your warp drive to get to.
To warp to the red star systems, you will need to upgrade the cadmium drive; you can buy it from the starship upgrade store on the space anomaly for nanites.
Red star systems tend to appear a reddish color on the galaxy map. When you view them, they usually don’t show what race, conflict level, etc. that the system is in until you warp to it for the first time.
Once you get on a planet with cadmium on it, all you have to do is use your analysis visor to find the cadmium and mine it with the terrain manipulator.
