Tainted steel is fairly easy to get, but you will need to find them on derelict Freighters, which aren’t that difficult to get to. However, you will need many units, especially if you’re planning on any space station in the system you’re in, as there should be a scrap dealer aboard the station. You have to talk to them.
If it’s your first time buying a receiver from the scrap dealer, it will cost 5 Mil. If you are planning on doing it multiple times in the same day, then you are going to need a lot more credits than that as each time you buy it, the price increases, with the price resetting the next day, 5-10-20-30 Million, with 30 Million being the max the cost will go up to.
Once you get on the derelict freighter, you have to explore the freighter and open any chests/crates you see as they can give tainted metal when opened, so it’s more or less a simple process.
Once you’ve gotten enough tainted metal, you have to head out and put the tainted metal into a refiner to convert it into nanite clusters.
