First, you have to boot up the game and then play cross-play. After that, go to the lobby, press the Options button and then click on settings from the top. Now you have to click on Audio.
In the audio settings, you have to scroll down and then navigate down under the voice chat. From there, you have to go to a game voice chat channel, this drop-down menu will show you options to set your voice chat. The options are Friends only, party chat, and lobby chat, you can select any options according to your choice. If you set this to the lobby, then only you will hear your friends present in the lobby.
After this, go back to the options menu and then select the Channels option from the top. You can create your own channel. After creating the channel, you have to connect to the channel and then you can invite people to this channel. With this, you can communicate with them in a private chat.
