Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is a turn-based strategy 4X video game developed by Firaxis Games. The game is the sixth installment in the civilization franchise.
Civilization VI is based on the familiar backdrop of other games in the series. You are given the command of a small nation and via cultural influence, military domination and technological breakthroughs, you have to develop a massive world power out of it through several periods of development. The hex based grid introduced in the previous game makes a come back. However, unlike previous games in the series, Civilization VI unstacks city districts from the main city tile and awards bonuses for placing districts near certain terrain types. In addition to this, military installations are now built into separate tiles from the main city tile. In order to avoid congestion on the map, you can perform limited amount of unit stacking with similar or symbiotic unit types.
The game introduces a new research system that is designed to boost technology research. A feature called Eureka Moments lets users increase their progress towards certain technologies after completing specific tasks. The game adds a new civics tress that integrates the cultural improvements previously part of the technology tree. Completing certain civics unlocks certain policies for the player’s government and you can then incorporate these policies into Economic, Diplomatic, Military and Wildcard categories. These policies allow or limit certain aspects of a civilization and can be changed for free when you complete a single Civic or for some cost any other time. Furthermore, when you make significant advances in a civics tree, it unlocks several features that give you a Cultural victory advantage over other players.
There are several victory conditions in the game (eXpand, eXploit, eXplore and eXterminate) based on the 4X elements. Each enemy you come across has a main agenda against you and a hidden agenda that can only be revealed through espionage. These agendas are specific to different leaders and sometimes mimic past historic events. Overall, the game is a massive improvement over previous versions and introduces several new features to keep the concept and gameplay fresh while keeping the time tested features that have kept the franchise alive for 25 years unchanged.
