Fire Emblem Awakening is a turn-based tactical role-playing video game developed by Intelligent Systems. It is the thirteenth entry in the Fire Emblem series.
The game is set 2000 years after the events of the original Fire Emblem and features Chrom, the Prince of Ylisse as the main focus of the story.
A long time ago, the ruler of Halidom of Ylisee was given power by the Divine Dragon Naga through two magical objects: A sword called Falchion that had the power to slay dragons and a magical shield known as the fire emblem. This was done to stop the Fell Dragon Grima who attempted to destroy the world. Presently, Ylisse is divided between Halidom of Ylisse, the Kingdom of Plegia and Regna Ferox. Exalt Emmeryn is the ruler of Halidom of Ylisse and he has assigned his brother Chrom’s militia force known as the Shepherds to defend the land.
The game feature a lot of battles and allows you select a certain number of players from the roster to fight alongside you. The game introduces a new auto battle option where you don’t have to manually control each unit and can let the computer do all the work. The game features a character class system with about 40 classes to choose from. Every character in the game has a starting class . You can improve your class by using “Master seals” and change your classes by using “Second Seals”. A character’s offense and mobility is affected by the class they are in and you thus have to choose your class based on your playstyle. There is a tile based movement system for every character and characters earn experience points as they progress through the game. When you get to 100 XP, your level increases by one improving your stats During combat, the perspective changes to a 3D scene between the characters. However, optional cameral angles including a first person view can be toggled on by the player.
The game allows you to build relationships with other characters through support conversations between chapters. These relationships are ranked from C to A. An additional S rank is available for relationships with opposite gender which allows you to fall in love, marry and have children.
As far as combat goes, you control sprite characters and the AI controls the enemy units in a turn based fashion. You can use an additional turn when unaffiliated AI units are in the battlefield. You can strategically recruit and position your characters and these characters support each other during battles granting buffs and blocking attacks. You can also pair up two characters as a single mobile unit enabling them to attack at once.
The game features a rich storyline with characters that detailed with intricate details. The gameplay is smooth and mechanics are very well optimized. All these features make this game a great addition in the iconic Fire Emblem Series.
