Graveyard Keeper is a graveyard-themed simulation role-playing video game developed by Lazy Bear Games. The game is based on Harvest Moon and features an open-ended world.
The game is based in medieval times and you assume the role of a person who has been hit by a car. When he wakes up, he finds himself taking care of a medieval cemetery. He digs graves, places headstones, craft goods, performs witch burnings and whatnot. He is financially compensated for said activities and puts the money into expanding the graveyard. It is essentially a game of capitalism and you have to do whatever it takes to keep the business thriving.
At the beginning of the game, the player inherits a land that includes a small graveyard from his ancestor. The graveyard has not been operational for a very long time and is covered all over with bushes, trees and stumps. Your first task is to clean things up and make the graveyard operational again. You can then turn to the graves and think about different ways to get the cash flowing. You have to think of various cost cutting measures to efficiently run your business and think of new ways to attract investment as well as customers. You can use religion to manipulate nearby villagers into attending the church within the graveyard and seek out investors for the maintenance and upgrade of the facilities inside the church. You can also organize entertainment events like witch burning festivals to increase your popularity and use the income to fund other projects. You can also choose to engage in questionable practices like taking the organs out of the bodies to sell them to the local butcher.
Throughout the game, you earn red, blue or green experience points and you can use them to unlock different technologies in the game. Your technology tree expands as you accomplish tasks and complete quests. Using the resurrection table, you can revive corpses and then use these zombies to complete your tasks in the graveyard and automate your supply chain. This leaves you free to pursue the main goal of the game, which is to get back to your character’s old world before he was hit by a car. To accomplish this, you interact with various NPCs and try to please them by completing their quests.
