Halo: Combat Evolved is a first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie.
The game takes place in a fictionalized 26th century setting. About 20 years before the beginning of the game, technologically advanced aliens known as The Covenant waged a holy war against humanity. Only the cybernetically augmented supersoldiers known as the Spartans were able to offer reasonable resistance but the sheer number of aliens proved too many to defeat.
In the 2552, the humans have perfected Faster than Light travel called Slipspace. This technology allows them to colonize planets other than Earth. One of these planets is “Reach” which serves as the hub of scientific and military activity. When covenant forces attack Reach, the Spartan Master Chief along with his AI assistant, Cortana escapes the planet in the hopes of jumping to Slipspace and leading the enemy away from earth. As soon as they exit the Slipspace, they come across a large ring shaped mysterious world known as Halo.
The game deviates from the traditional mechanics featured in other first person shooters. It allows you to use weapons like grenades and knives while your firearm is still equipped and does not force you to put it in its holster. Some of the weapons featured in the game take inspiration from science fiction and offer unique functionalities based on the scenarios they are deployed in. One thing to note is that unlike most games, you can only carry two weapons at once forcing you to choose them strategically. Additionally, the game offers two different types of grenades including plasma grenades that stick to targets before going off and fragmentation grenades that bounces and explodes quickly.
As the Master Chief, your character has an energy shield that neutralizes damage from forceful impacts and weapon’s fire. If you don’t take damage for some time, this shield automatically fills up back. However if you do manage to deplete it to zero, the player character dies and the game restarts from a saved checkpoint.
Different groups of Covenant forces featured in the game include Jackals, Elite, Grunts and Hunters. The game also features secondary antagonists including the parasitic aliens knowns as the Flood and the aerial robots called the Sentinels.
Primarily a first person shooter, the game switches to third person perspective for pilots and mounted gun operators during vehicle use. The many player operable vehicles featured in the game range from alien hovercrafts to armored 4x4s. The heads up display incorporates a motion sensor that detects moving allies, enemies and vehicles present nearby.
