Description
Dead Cells is a roguelike action platformer video game developed and published by Motion Twin. The game is inspired by Metroidvania-style games.
The game takes place on an unnamed island and is loosely inspired by the Binding of Isaac. It features “The Prisoner”, a selectively mute greenish slime like creature as the main character of the game. The character awakens in a prison in the island next to a giant skeleton appropriately named “The Giant”. The prisoner manages to escape the prison and finds out that once a mighty kingdom, the island was struck with a plaque known as The Malaise. The plaque ended up reducing most of the island’s inhabitants to mindless zombies. The alchemist at the time worked tirelessly to develop a cure but the king didn’t approve and the alchemist mysteriously disappeared.
The prisoner is now headed to the castle to kill the king in hopes of changing the landscape of the island. On his way, he encounters several entities including the Concierge, who used to be the prison guard’s Castaing before he transformed into a hulking monster: the Time Keeper who resets times each day to prevent her own infection and Conjunctivius, a nameless, faceless corpse. The prisoner has an immortal head but he needs a corpse as a host body in order to navigate the world. Every time an enemy successfully kills him, his head goes back to the prison in order to find a new corpse to possess.
The game features an in-game currency known as “the Cells” that can be used to make upgrades and purchase and unlock different items. Dead Cells use a permadeath system costing the player all his upgrades and other cells every time he dies. The game incorporates frequent player character deaths as a core part of the game and features six bosses known as Keepers that you must defeat. There are multiple levels in the game and each level is procedurally generated by combining predesigned sections in a random configuration.
