Nier: Automata is an action role-playing game developed by “PlatinumGames”. It is a sequel to the 2010 game Nier. The game switches between the standard third person perspective and the overhead or side scrolling view.
Combining role-playing elements with action based hack and slash combat, the game is set in the post apocalyptic setting of its predecessor, taking place thousands of years after its fourth ending. It is set in the year 11945 AD and features human built androids at the cusps of war with an army of invaders made up of machines.
The game features 3 protagonists including YoRHa/ 2B, a calm and composed combat android, A2 who is a loner obsolete attack android and 9S, a male scanner Android. These androids are aided by box like robots called Pod 153 and Pod 042 which act as ranged weapons. These YoRHa android forces are commanded from a bunker orbiting above earth.
The game supports standard navigation on foot as well as piloting flying mechs and using special items to ride certain animals. Additionally there are some platforming elements which require you to navigate by jumping. The game allows you to switch between faster but weaker “light attacks” and slow and more powerful “heavy attacks”. In addition to fighting, you can also deploy evading tactics like enabling temporary invulnerability to escape attacks. You are also aided by the flying robot assistants called ‘Pods’ which can launch customizable ranged attacks. In addition to that, they can also shield you from different enemy attacks. You can also use melee weapons to further diversify your arsenal. Four different classes of weapons are available which include spears, bracers, long swords and short swords. As you progress through the game, your characters gain experience levels and their skills and attributes increase.
The game features five main endings that are labelled A through E and 21 additional endings labelled F to Z. The additional endings are game over events activated by certain actions in the game.
