Red Dead Redemption 2 is a 2018 action-adventure game developed and published by Rockstar Games. The game serves as the prequel to the 2010 game Red Dead Redemption and is the third entry in the Red Dead franchise. Featuring an open world design, the game is presented in both first and third person perspectives.
The game is set in the fictional recreation of the American Old-West in 1899. The game spans across five fictitious U.S. states including Lemoyne, a state that resembles Louisiana, New Hanover which is the hub of industry, Ambarino which is a mountain wilderness, West Elizabeth which contains dense forests and wide plains and the deserted state of New Austin.
After being forced to flee Blackwater, the Van der Linde gang decides to retire once they have enough money to escape law. With Dutch promising every next heist to be the last, the gang members begin to doubt each other. When Jack double crosses the gang, Dutch ends up kidnapping him and feeding him to an alligator. Dutch obsesses over ‘one last heist’ and questions Arthur’s loyalty when he disobeys him eventually naming Micah as his top Lieutenant. Some time later, Arthur finds out he has Tuberculosis.
Worried about the gang members’ future after his death, Arthur advises John to openly defy Dutch and run away with Abigail and Jack. Meanwhile, Dutch becomes paranoid about the possibility of a gang member working as an informant. Nonetheless, he along with Micah decide to go for one final heist of an army payroll train. But things don’t go as planned and Micah is revealed to be the informer. Arther goes back to camp to confront Micah. Micah attacks Arthur and Dutch intervenes in their fight. If the player has high honor, Arthur dies due to his disease and injuries while watching the sunrise. If he has low honor, Micah ends up killing him.
Red dead Redemption 2 features stunning landscapes featuring wildlife, bandits and sometimes travelers. The game depicts horses as the main mode of transportation and features different breeds which you have to tame and train in order to use them. In addition to horses, you can also use trains and stagecoaches to travel. In addition to advancing through your character’s own storyline, you can also interact with random events encountered while exploring the game world. These include ambushes, public executions and crimes committed by other people. The main source of food and income is hunting animals. Your choice of weapon and shot placement affects the quality of meat and thus the subsequent price the traders are willing to pay.
The game brings back the Honor System from its predecessor and rewards the player for the morality of his actions. Helping people and abiding the law increases your honor and negative activities like robbing decreases it. In addition to that, the game features “cores” which affect the rate at which the player’s health and stamina regenerate. Wearing warmer clothes in summer leads to perspiration and a rapid depletion of cores. You also have to maintain the hygiene of your character by taking regular baths to stay clean and going to a barber to get a hair cut every once in a while. The weapons also need to be periodically cleaned to maintain their performance.
