First of all, you will need a metal detector license of level one that you can get from Fletch. You will also need to get an excavation license which will help you to get a shovel to dig up the dirt.
And also you gonna need to have John’s shop and his permanent residence unlocked. From there, you can get a metal detector.
For damaging barrels, you need another tool like a pickaxe or a woodcutting axe. Once you have all, right click on the metal detector to start detecting. 
The metal detector will make a slow beeping sound when there’s nothing in the area. When it detects something, the beeping will increase and there will be a light bluish visual on the ground.
After that, you have to start digging and find the item.
The 2nd level is very useful, it will allow you to see some hidden locations of the treasures without using the metal detector. When you move across the ground, you will see small grey crosses, dig out that area with your shovel to find the items.
